Background

The Foundation for Research on Educational Planning and Development (FREPD) is a non-political, non-profit, voluntary organization devoted to research. Registered under the Societies Registration Act xxi of 1860 and approved by the National Board of Revenue under sub-section 5 of section 15 D of the Income Tax Act of 1922 for tax exemption. The FREPD is also registered with the Economic Relations Division (ERD) of the Ministry of Finance (Registration No. 199). The FREPD was founded on 11 November, 1973 by a group of committed scholars. Notable among those actively associated with the founding of the FREPD were late Professor Abdul Matin Chowdhury, former Vice-Chancellor, Dhaka University, late Professor Quazi Motahar Hussain of Dhaka University, late Dr. M. A. Rashid, the founder Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and late Dr. Enamul Huq, former Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University. In the establishment of the FREPD, it received generous help and co-operation from the University of Dhaka which included an initial research grant, free accommodation in the Institute of Education and Research (IER) building and subsequently a piece of land where the FREPD is now housed in its own building. Dhaka University is also closely associated with the management and development of the FREPD. The Vice Chancellor of the Dhaka University continues to be the ex-officio Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the apex body in the organizational structure of the FREPD.
